Colder is one thing but 30% dissapation is another! Ideal is about 60% IMO but the normal range can be as low as 50%. Yeah I am using the 4 ohm setting on an 8 ohm cab at half power. Yeah 5ma is not totaly unacceptable but I know this was a matched quad to 1ma when they were new. That's what makes me think that this tube may be too far gone. I don't know what the problem is with this amp. I used to run my 2005 QR in 2nd gear with gain between 9:00-10:00 and there was plenty of gain to spare. I ordered new tubes today so I will try this all again when they get here. If that doesn't fix it, I'll let Scott figure it out!

Splawndude, I have a two socket Bias Rite. Can I use this with a QR? Would I do the inner pair first, and the outer pair 2nd (2+3 first, 1+4 second)?
Great tutorial by the way. Thanks!

^Thanks Matt.
Yep. Inner first, than outer. You may have already done it. Sorry for delayed response.

OK guys, I got the tubes (4 JJ's 12AX7's and 4 Sushuang EL34B's) and biased the quad at 31mA. It sounds better for sure. I still wasn't 100% happy when I was finished though. The next day I really spent some time dialing things in. I had a 2005 QR but there have been a few changes since that model was built. My tendency was to just set it like the old one and not get to know THIS amp. I still would like a little more gain (IMO-even if I don't use it all it still seems to thicken things up a bit). I ended up liking the sound better with the loop on with the -4db setting and the loop volume about 90% of the way up. It seemed to smooth things out and take away a little grainyness. I typically set my amps very dark but for some reason I like a little more mids, terble, and especially presence with this amp. I turned the gain up to about 1:00 and used 2nd gear. I am running it through a Marshall cab with four G12H30's and playing a stock 1993 PRS CE24. I am really liking this setup! This sound is really really good IMO. I have been really loving the Friedman modded amp that I just got a week or so ago. I A/B'ed the Splawn against the Friedman today and I think I actually prefer the Splawn. That really surprised me because The Friedman has been rocking my boat big time. Thanks for selling me this amp Lewis!!! I am getting happier by the day with amp now. hats of to Scott. YOU ARE THE MAN BRO!

I bought a bias probe on Amazon and followed your guide. When I set my meter to volts (auto range) I'm seeing 465 Volts not MV. Is this probe different or am I doing something wrong? I am competent enough to set bias I've just never done it before. FYI my mA reading was 25. Amp sounded bad. Turned it up to 32 and all the bite came back. Brand new quikrod from Scott. Must have drifted down because it sounded great when I first got it.

It can definitely drift down. Glad you got in the sweet spot. I gave up on the cheap probes. Not saying yours was cheap. I got a Weber that I'm happy with, And then another one that measures all 4 at once.
PS: I believe most of us are now over at the Splawn Sub Forum on Rig-Talk. This place is a ghost town.
