I was a big skynyrd fan when I was a kid . Tuesdays gone was the first song I learned to play on guitar . Don't care for them much now . their current stuff sounds to country to me .I'm really burnt out on the old stuff . I live in the south and when I was playing in the bars in my younger days if you didn't play 3 or 4 skynyrd songs you didn't get many gigs . If i had to play gimme three steps again I think I might shoot myself . Btw as far as I know the only ones that are dead (4 of them) all died in the plane crash with the exception of Alan Collins who died in a car crash after surviving the plane crash . Gary Rossington lives next door to my dentist . She says hes a really quiet nice guy and that her kids swim in his pool . I hear hes really, really burnt out . On a side note I think my dentist makes too much money when she can afford to live next door to a rock star.

I was a big Skynyrd fan too -- played lots of their music a couple of decades ago.
With regard to the "original band" status (not counting female backup singers), Ronnie Van Zant, Leon Wilkeson, Billy Powell, and Allen Collins are deceased. Bob Burns and Ed King left the band within the first 2 albums and were replaced by Artimus Pyle (still kicking) and Steve Gaines (deceased). Ricky Medlocke was in/out of the band briefly as well. Then there's the whole post plan crash / tribute band era. Gary Rossington remains the only constant and surviving member since the band's inception.
I read a good biography about the band a few years ago (can't remember the name of the book). I was surprised to find out how fast they cranked out all their material -- from the time they were signed until the plan crash, it was only like 3 years or so. It sounded like a fast and furious ride. I was also surprised how bitter and litigous Ronnie Van Zant's wife was toward the band after the plane crash -- holding back rights to the band name, music, suing the band for attempts to regroup, etc... If the band was willing to move forward after the plane crash, she really squashed their efforts.

Whoops...forgot to mention Huey Thomasson was in that band for a while(newer tribute type), went out to dinner with his wife, came home, popped in the recliner to watch a game, fell asleep, and had a massive heart attack.....WTF....and Billy Powell almost the same way...pretty screwed up......

I think Powell had a heart attack with the past year or so. I recall Wilkeson had some sort of liver disease and died around 2001.
... Interesting side note about the plane crash... In their up and coming '70's fame Aerosmith went plane shopping. They passed on a plane that they thought was in terrible condition. Shortly after than Skynyrd picked up a lease on the very same plane and we know how that went. How different would rock'n roll be today if it Skynyrd's career carried on and Aerosmith was snuffed out?
