got a couple of new ruby's in for the Nitro. I must say, after hearing a set in our rhythm player's Einstein then hearing that they're Adam Jones' 12AX7 of choice and his Diezels all have them, I decided to give them a shot. I've been using sovtek 12AX7WC's in all but the primary input driver for the overdrive (used a NOS Mullard there) and to be honest, these sound every bit as good. Not quite as warm but more powerful than the mullard. The tone changed very very little but if I go to a JJ's or EHX, the OD channels tone immediately gets more harsh and brittle and cold sounding. So for a quarter of the cost of a new mullard, they're about as close as I've heard. Did a few sound clips with the new tubes. One is just a guitar track of me chugging around on random stuff. (the ass kicking starts at 3:45~ish) www.drewlankford.com/music/nitrorubytubetest.mp3they went in V2 and V3 (the two overdrive tubes). I also did a full song using the new tubes over in the clips section. It's the triplet song.

I really need to get some new tubes...these sound cool. I read that Scott isn't using the JJ's anymore...too much variance in quality I guess? I really am not a fan of the tung-sols...will probably try these next. and maybe match them up with the shuangang's - lots of people like those too. Ever try the Chinese v9's Drew? I'm looking for a more warm tight growl. Is that what you mean by the JJ's are colder? I'm sold on the winged C for power tubes...so no quandary there.

I might have had bad ones...but I tried a few of them in the QR and put the originals back in. Also tried an NOS RFT and didn't like that at all either, more gain, but not good gain. and noisy.

yeah I've got several 9th gen shugangs, a few pentas, etc..
No BS here but even after recording an A/B comparison, I had both of my NOS mullards in V2 and V3 and then did a 2nd test with the two ruby's in V2 and V3 and no lie, there was next to zero difference. The rubys have a bit more bite to them and the mullards have a bit more smoothness and more fattness to the mids and upper mids. Not a substancial amount but after listening to the tracks back to back with a critical ear I can hear the slight differences (for the better) in the Mullards but one should expect that for $50/each tubes.
Live, you won't tell a difference.

Tung-Sol preamps tubes are great for certain situations. They can make a super high-gain amp like the Peavey's sound better, more tone and less fizz. And they can be good for using in the first preamp tube position in many other amps. But they do have somewhat of a sterile overtone to them. They are a must-have in the tube arsenal though.

I'll second the sound of the new Ruby's. I'm still waiting on my Nitro (should only be a few more days now ) but I recently replaced a new set of Chinese silver dragons in my 2555SL with a set of the new Ruby's. I was sold from the first riff I played. Definitely warmer and more defined. Not bad at all for a new production tube, and definitely not bad for the price. Full set of Ruby's will cost you what one NOS Mullard or RCA will set you back. I'm wondering what difference I'd hear with a new set of Ruby EL34's replacing the set of JJ E34L's that I switched to not long ago?
