I play Tool covers in a band and get great sounds out of my Mesa DR for this. Tool " purists " ( that's funny ... I said Tool Purists for people who like straight up Tool ) would scoff at a DR for Tool tones but Schism as well as 46x2 never sounded so good.
I guess its just a matter of how you want your Tool to sound...... ;D

Really? I'm looking for An Lateralus/ 10,000 days tone. That's exactly what I want but I little warmer. Sounds like the Nitro is going to be a great choice. Could you do some tool videos with you pro mod man? Thanks alot ! I'll have to look to see if I kept that magazine but I think I threw it out after I read it a few times. You can definitely get the Lateralus/10,000 days tone with the Nitro for sure and it will probably be a bit smoother than the Diezel/Rivera/Bogner tone. I could try an do some vids of early Tool stuff but my rig is always at my practice space. I am going there tonight but don't have much time to learn a Tool song (I forgot them all). Any particular song? Maybe next week I can do it.

You have to take into consideration they are using studio preamps and other trick stuff to warm up the sound, so you may get close to the tone. I find it hard to relate to emulating someone's exact tone. I try and have different/better tone than what I hear on the CDs. I got to check out Tool's guitar rig up close when I worked their show. He was using two Diezel VH4s with 4 cabs. He had some rack stuff and a few pedals. He also had four of the same les pauls in the guitar rack. I didn't see any other trick stuff. Nothing really exciting. His tone was good with a medium gain/crunch thing going on. I don't know if it was the second hand marijuana smoke I was breathing or lack of action on stage, but it was the most boring concert I have seen. The tunes were good, but boring. IMO. We were told they were not going to come back to Jacksonville because we (police) walked near their dressing rooms after the show and messed up their sex/drugs session backstage when we were leaving the venue. Oh well......... LOL, he was probably joking like vicariousvirus said. He is a sarcastic wacko like that. I fell asleep at the last Tool show I went too, partially because I was in the nose-bleed seats and it sounded horrible.

I think the Quick Rod can get the older Tool tones...the Nitro is probably the one for the newer tones. And a Les Paul...and a ton of effects. ;D I'm a tool fan myself DD...yer not the only one. Nice, didn't know that!

Well Adam Definatley loves his mids, So either way. The QR has a higher mid voicing, and the Nitro a Lower Mid/ Lower End. Which Adam Doesn't have too much off. Could you make a video or do some clips of like Swamp song, Stinkfist? or a few songs off of undertow/ AEnima? That would be amazing=] Thanks for your time man Adam mostly used the Marshall Super Bass back then which had the 6550 tubes like my Pro Mod so I think that the Pro Mod would do a better job than the QR at older Tool.

It's not quite there because it lacks the mid bite of teh Marshall mixed in but good enough. I actually think the Nitro would do this better.

Haha, I don't think the splawn will beat the VH4 or The Uberschall, but I really don't know. Is there anyone here who is familiar with Adam Jones's tone and Tool in general, and could give me a good idea of that. Or anyone who could record some sound clips of some Tool on the Nitro, thanks for all the help guys. Only thing you need for adam's sound is a lot of gain, way over boosted mids, random assortments of flangers, wahs & delays all in front of the amp. I owned a vh4s & I HATED IT. The sound was so stock I chould have shot myself in the head. Plus, not sure who you got your info from but there was NO uberschall on the album that was the ecstasy, my buddy helped do digital editing on that album, & yes...the k-tre rivera was used ALOT more than what you think, A LOT. Problem is...the mesa was once unique...had a very distinguished tone to it...give it 4 years...everyone owned one & used the exact same settings, so 5 years or so after initial diezel hype...all the big name acts use um too...they've become as common as the mesas in their day were. Believe me, if you want to do heavy...get the uberschall...you'll heavy it up WAY more than any other amp in the world...but, if you want to diversify & try something a tad different, you'll be SOL, because that amp ONLY does the heavy sound. That is why everyone who has them eitehr has other amps to switch to for cleans or less distorted sounds or is simply only a heavy played. Now Adam plays the diezel because he doesn't channel switch just rolls off his guitar volume for the cleans & the diezel does great cleans...I think the splawn would be A DAMN FINE choice as most of us around do do a lot of volume roll offs for our cleans etc...you this amp WILL do the heavy & will clean up much nicer than any of the other amps you mentioned. Just my opinion & a few facts. Hope that helps. Note...Adam ONLY uses the marshall to clean up the saturation from other amps...so don't think about buying two super high gain amps like the nitro/uberschall & the vh4 7 running them together you sound will just sound like HISS/FIZZ FIZZ -Brent

We used to do The Pot in the band I'm in when we had our female singer...sounded really cool. Drummer had a hard time with it, so we dropped it. QR will get you The Pot tones no prob, and DD says the pro-mod is even better for that. Nitro for sure.

No way, Damn man. I'm alot closer to a tone I want. I love the New albums tone, but the Rivera sounds a little lacking to me. there is a certain treble I don't like about it. I like the tone in Undertow and Lateralus the Best. But Lateralus tone, is pretty much what I'm going for, and new sh!t. Just warmer. If clips are videos are possible they'd be much abliged. Thanks everyone for all the amazing help!

Man, all I have is a clip of me playing Sober, but it's with a Mesa before I got the QR...so that probably won't help.

Honestly, I think the AEnema tone & even some lateralus is best done with a quickrod & the occassional overdrive pedal in front to boost feedback...but the thing about those older albums is that the gain wasn't as thick as on the new one. But the nitro will just give you the extra low end that Adamn gets out of the Diezels live. I think you'll be damn happy with your choice...PLUS, much like Adamn probably had for the first two years of playing the diezels...most likely EVERYONE will be coming up to you being like...dude what kind of amp is that! It sounds so much better than my triple rectum-fryer... ALWAYS A GOOD THING! -Brent
