I've got dimarzio evolutions in one guitar and it's so smooth and sweet of a tone. My other one has a dimarzio air norton at the neck and duncan pearly gates at the bridge. Again, a very smooth singing sound.
don't discredit the speakers either...OR the cab. The cab and speakers have an ENORMOUS impact on the smoothness of the sound. I just put a pair of earcandy greenmachine's, a V30 and G12H30 in my new splawn 4X12 and it is so neutral and adaptive it's crazy. I can get it to be sharp, percussive and punchy or fat spongy and singing.
On the other hand, our rythem guitar player's diezel 4X12 just can't do this. It's got a scooped midrange, clean percussive low end but not nearly as "big" as the nitro's and a it has a cutting sharp high end. It just doesn't sing for lead work the way the splawn does but it excells at big powerful heavy rythem playing which is what he does.
