talked to scott..and I feel a little better..
first off he said that as long as the tubes I have in there now aren't burning brighter than usual it's ok..and moving them around is fine cause they're a matched quad...
secondly he said because the way teh loop is designed, it'll sound a little harsh and thin at low volumes..when you turn it up it starts to 'catch up' to the rest of the amp...so he told me to make sure I have the loop bypassed even though there's nothing in there..because even with nothing connected, it'll still be engaged (which also accounts for th elittle sonic screech I get when I power down..that's the fx loop shutting off)..
so I think I should be ok...he said try that out and see if it still works...if it works ok, then I can send him the bum tubes back and he'll send me new ones..
I hope I have the damn boxes the tubes came in!!!!!

one other thing..he said that when the fx loop is on, whatever volume you have of the gear in there essentially takes over....
which is the problem i encountered.I was in the user patches and apparently the dude had the input and output set to 100 on each...
this, in effect, was like running the volume on the amp ALL THE WAY UP..which scott said is bad...they're not designed to run THAT high..and you really shouldn't have to anyway....
so beware..
first thing I'm gonna do is plug the midiverb in (to the wall, not the amp) and adjust all the input and output levels very low....I don't want to run into this problem again

I guess I'm just a purist. I play completly dry. I've never even tried the effects loop. The guy who runs sound for us alot says he loves mixing me because I'm so easy to get a good sound through the PA. I been getting a lot of weird emails and stuff from Splawn users asking alot of effects questions and stuff, I don't know what it is but I think some people are just missing it with this amp... They don't get it. Its very frustrating. No offense, but I can't believe I'm the only person who owns a Splawn who thinks 1) The amp sounds great at ANY volume and 2) No body can hear your effects through a PA anyway, so why bother with them? Maybe I'm the weird one..

Maybe I'm the weird one.. haha..no, you're not weird (well, actually you are...but not cause you don't use fx..lol..j/k, buddy..hehe)..I usually use a very spartan fx setup as well...to be honest, it's mostly just for farting around at home.....the show or two that we've played so far, the fx have been put in on the pa..a litlte reverb, that's about it..I got the alesis just to try it out..see what all the hub bub was..and I got it VERY cheap..that and I had some cash in paypal from a pickup sale, so it cost me next to nothing.. will I keep it? the jury's still out..I might just get a delay pedal and be done with it...haven't really decided yet.. but you heard the clips..those were on low volumes, no fx..I LOVE the third gear dude....it's so liquid....

yeah, and the clips sounded great by the way. You got an excellent tone, no effects needed.

I'm in the same camp as Craig regarding effects, I've never been inclined to even try the loop yet. I like a wah in front of the amp, along with MAYBE a Phase 90, but that's it. I really dig some healthy verb or delay on studio tracks such as Lynch's Wicked Sensation album, but for live work no thanks. There's studio, and then there's live, and the two are NOT the same. I see so many great players just wreck their tone and technique by not understanding that.

I'm actually thinkin' of just ditchin' rack crap altogether and goin' with a friggin' pedal...LOL...I had a pedal, but didn't like it..so I sold it and then got the alesis... I dunno..we'll see....I think keeping it simple is the way to go for me..

I still have my rack system, I really like it if I want to go that way. It's an ADA MP2 and MP1, Mesa 50/50 power amp, Yamaha SPX900, sounds great. That system covers ALOT of ground. The past few years I've been in an 80's metal band, and simplicity is they key there. There's something liberating and pure there, just a kicking head, a 4x12, a wah, and play loud! I never get tired of that raw tone. It'll make a man out ya too.......no delay and verb to hide hehind.

I used to have a rack back in the day..triaxis with a simul class 290 power amp..hated it...LOL...(as you can see, I'm no stranger to tube gear)...
but I always think that a good head and cab is the way to go..maybe a pedal or two..which is the way I think I'm gonna go...just a boss delay pedal a wah, and that'll be that =)

I have one piece of rack gear that I love - a Rocktron Xpression. That thing is amazing the way it actually sounds like stomp boxes. It does a better phase 90 than my phase 90...
...but that's the only piece I've kept. Definitely prefer the simplest setup possible for live playing.

I used to have an intellifex...that thing sounded good..nto the most user friendly thing Ive ever had, but it was very transparent..
I think I'm more of a pedal guy though..a delay pedal and that's it for me

I use an Alesis Quadraverb for just a touch of chorus and delay to fatten things up a bit..Been using one since the 80's and if it ain't broke don't fix it. the good old Roland GP-8 is also a great unit to use..Damn....I'm getting old....hehe
