After more tweakin the controls on my new quick rod I am liken it more and more. Its definately a paint peeler to say the least. I can imagine what it would sound like with a 4x12 cab... I may upgrade to a 2x12 from my 1x12 which still sounds amazing. That little speaker is lovin it. I would love to do a comparison with some of the high gain top gun amps out there. That would be fun.....

glad you're liking it! i just did a pretty good comparison against a 5150 combo...the 5150 combo definitely has more gain but's it so noisy...even with a boss ns-2 or isp decimator plugged in...the articulation in the notes isn't there like it is in the quick rod....and the quick rod just sounds more "brown"

Yeah,
I remember when the 5150's came out I rushed to the store to play one. I was really dissapointed not in the fact that it didn't sound good but I did not hear the classic VH sound in it. At the time I was using a marshall jubilee with a tube driver. That sounded more like ed's sound then the 5150. It is amazing the clarity the splawn gets even with the overdrive cranked! My only complaint is it seems to have a bit of a midrange wah tone no matter how you set the eq which the 5150 seems to have also. There is some dude that posted some clips on the Plexi palace website that sound real close to ed's sound. He is using a older plexi head with a dummy load. There is also a dude named Guy on the Eddievanhalen.com website that gets a real good VH tone with a marshall and a variac. The splawn could very well be the closest thing to old VH out of the box though it is a little different from Ed's classic sound.

Hi, I have not recieved my QR yet, however my Splawn 4x12 ships tomorow!!! Anyway, I don't know about the issue you have with the mids, but it could be the cab/speaker you are using. Some speakers are made to sound more midrangy then others! Also, tubes, both power/preamp have certain tonal characteristcs, so you may want to check into other cabs/tube combinations. That is what I have found to be the case Rock n Roll

Hi,
Thanks for your input. The speaker cab is a mesa rectifier 1x12 with a celestion vintage 30. The tubes are the mullard el 34's. I really don't buy into the tube hype too much as far as sound goes. All I ever noticed was a difference when putting new tubes in any amp compared to old worn tubes was the amp was more punchy. Not a different tone so to speak. Same thing with pickups, some are hotter, some are weaker, some have more mids...etc. You have so many controls from start to finish you can always adjust something to make it work. I hear the same mid in the splawn sound clips as well. Maybe I just need to retune my ears. I have been playing a fender prosonic for a few years and it have a very natural tone. Its probably just old age...

I've found the QR to sound extremely similar to VH's sound on Van Halen II. Like the intro to DOA has that same mid-range wah-honk yor talking about.. so does light up the sky and SGMAD. Out of the box it nails that tone. I actually prefer the sound on II, WACF, Fair Warning over the 1st album's reverb drenched more distant sound.

Craig,
I would like to record some guitar tracks to see how it comes out on tape. Very few studio recordings I have heard from people claiming to emulate the old VH tone are even in the ball park. Including that mojave peacemaker amp which to me isn't even close. I listened to your clips and though your style is not to much like Ed's I would have never remotely thought "Van Halen tone besides the playing". In fact nothing really on Scotts website other then the live clips which are close to ed's old live sound really sound like old VH to me. I spoke to scott a few times before deciding to buy the QR and he did not claim the amp does the old VH sound he claims it does a like old VH type of sound. I think he has gotten as close as you possibly can without using a voltage regulator/dummy load type thing. BTW listen to those sound clips I posted. IMO they are a bit closer to any sound on the splawn website to ed's old sound.

I have the 1st Badlands record. Its a cool tone. I prefer old VH or Gary Moore's Victims of the future and the one before that one. STP gets a real good sound also.

Hi all.... I have been lurking around here for quite awhile reading up on what is soon to be my next amp(Quick Rod).!I think it is what I have been searching for all along.I just wish I could try one out, hands on...........
Anyway: I also love Jake's tone on Badlands.I am pretty sure that is either a plexi or a JMP Marshall with a SD-1 overdrive in front. I had a Metaltronix M-1000 that nailed that "dry" tone ala Badlands.I'm sorry I had to let go of that one.

The Tone on D.O.A. is my ideal rock guitar sound of all time, I love that "aah" honk sound. It just sounds......raw and electric at the same time. What kind of guitar do you suppose it was he used for VH2 and WACF? I dont want to cop his exact tone, but something similar.
