hi guys..as you know im fairly new to this forum.and as previously mentioned in another thread i have a competition and 4x12 on order with scott loaded with kt77's.these tubes were recommended by scott as he asked me what my influences were. my question is im a massive john sykes fan..do any of you guys think that the amp is capable of gettin close to sykes's tone? i know on the w/snake 87 album he used mesa coliseum 300 heads for the rhythm and his Jose Arredondo modded marshall 2204 for the leads. its the rhythm sound im trying to approximate from the 87 era.. to me this is one of the best rock sounds ever recorded.. his first blue murder album comes a close second.. any help on this would be fantastic

cheers shreder..like i say im new to the splawn amps and have never played through one..so im only guessing really..im not really looking for that super saturated lead sound..the rhythm sound from that album still knocks me out today.. that and zakk's tone from 'no rest for the wicked' ozzy album..2 fantastic tones i think IMO..

Hey Darren,
Classic album and a classic rhythm sound! I know from our chat on YouTube that you've seen Boz's clips on there. Don't you find his Les Paul stuff pretty Sykesian? That's always what it's reminded me of. The way it handles pinch harmonics and responds to vibrato. I think when you find the right pickup and EQ setting on the amp, you'll be right in that area no problem. (So long as you're experienced and realize it will sound more raw and lively in person than on that mega-produced 80s album!)

hi gray..yeah ive seen boz's clips..that les paul sounds wonderful through his QR..yeah i know its not gonna sound the same..im just looking for the ballpark area of the tone..i would say my playing is very similar to boz's..wide vibrato and pinch harmonics.. he has a great smooth tone on his youtube clips..i think there is a touch of reverb and delay in the mix too which has always worked for me too..just to smooth things out a little.. hope everthing went well on your trip over here to the uk...

I agree Boz has that very smooth sound. His tone seems unique in the Splawn realm.

hope everthing went well on your trip over here to the uk... Well I was there for my dad's funeral, then got trapped because my US visa expired, and it rained every day, but apart from that, yeah, it went well. Anyway! This thread had me spinning 1987 a few times in the last couple of days. I realized I could remember how to play a couple of the riffs, so I figured today, when I'm supposed to be writing an article with a deadline of tomorrow morning, what better time to let you hear some Sykes riffs on the Competition? These are rough as a badger's arse. Just fragments that I can remember. I don't know how long it is since I last played this stuff. No production done at all, raw recordings. Still, I think you'll see how a little compression and obviously more than one guitar track would get you into what you hear on the album. Beginning of Bad BoysDisjointed bits of Still of the NightI'm sure some of this is in the wrong order or just plain wrong, but what the hey. (Sorry about the static pops. The mic isn't clipping, but something has been causing that when I record for a while now and I haven't tracked it down.)

Oh, I know it. I lived there from birth to about 25. Two weeks of 'sun', two weeks of frost, 48 weeks of gray.
Pentode mode, near the top of 2nd Gear (OD2, gain about 3 PM) with EQ just on my usual day-to-day settings: presence 7.30, bass 8.00, middle 11.00, treble 10.00. Yup, bass is very low! Strange around these parts, but it's what my ears want.

To nail John Sykes rythem sound is actually much easier than you think. About ten years ago I nailed it with a Laney AOR100 amp. John used the Mesa Boogies that included a 5 band EQ which was user selectable. In order to nail his sound, you need an amp with an rear effects loop. Then you need to get a Boss 7 band EQ foot peddle and run it through the effects loop on your amp. Kill the mids and shape the EQ like a V. Crank the Gain on the front of the amp and kill the mids on the front as well. It will take some fine adjustment but after you mess with it for a while, you will finally get it. I took me a couple of hours but I finally got it. His lead sound is a different story. In order to get his lead sound, you have to crank the treble on the amp and cut the tone knob down on the quitar. I learned this seeing him play on the Blue Murder Tour. Everytime he would start to play a lead, he adjusted the tone knob on his bridge pickup. I have to say that live, his sound is closer to AC/DC than Whitesnake. The rythem sound is incredible once you nail it. Good luck!
