Thanks ed had many different guitars back then...he used a les paul for some of the back yard parties...around that time he had a black fender strat that i've seen pictures of where he hacked the picguard and put in a humbucker (this was before the frankenstrat)...later on around that time he picked up the ibanez destroyer... no set timeframe as to when the frankenstrat was born but i'm guessing it had to be around '77

Thanks Vom I really dig the old VH stuff .Raw and powerful ,not to mention how smokin' and on fire they were back then.I actually prefer Ed's playing and sound back then. Alex VH was a freakin' terror on his kit back then too. Double bass kickin' asssssss.....I love the live version of "Eyes of the Night"..especially the outro, that's just insane heavy way ahead of it's time......

agreed vom,, the older suff rocks!
Maybe this is myth, ?? I've heard many stories, eddie ran multiple heads/cabs at the same time, one was for clean, one for dirty, one for effects. then a backup for each . what is your thought on this? speaking of the older days. and I have found sites that state they actually had " other amps" in the chassis. which I think is a myth. just hot rodded marshalls.. ??
and what tubes did eddie run in those old marshalls? I heard Sylvania 6CA7/EL34, commonly referred to as the 'Big Bottle' or ''Fat Bottle' Sylvania 6CA7's

Man I am sure someone here knows more about this than me but..
I am to understand that he used a non modified plexi (67 or 68),The house amp from Pasadena or something or other.
6CA7 tubes.Variac to LOWER the voltage and a wet/dry setup. The plexi was basically a preamp or tone shaper and then into H&H power amps or into other Marshalls for output to cabs.
It is very interesting to me his sound/gear and I am of the mind that he was/is just that good that he made the Marshall sound that way with no tricks or major mods.
The variac wasn't used all the time I think .
Vom?

Vom? based off the pic that was taken in 79 from their rehearsal room that shows the back of the marshall, there's a toggle switch on the back next to the lettering that isn't on stock marshalls. i spoke w/ mark cameron on this and he thinks this is the mod that jose did. he can explain it better as to what he thinks it does but it basically was to drive the amp a bit harder. if you look at the back of the amp in the GW pic above you'll see a flat head screw where the toggle switch was in 79...definitely not a stock marshall....
