Hey fellers,
Got the Competition on order. Have a speaker question/questions for y'alls. Though the best of worlds would probably be to get a Splawn 2x12, I'm on the fence and considering an Avatar for a couple of reasons:
1. Cost of course. I've read good things about the Avatars - and the Splawn's going to take me a tad out of my budget if I go that way. However, I have heard neither an Avatar nor a Splawn cab in person (nor a Splawn amp in person for that matter - so this is all about leaps of faith).
2. The Avatars have that Hellatone option, which my understanding is a "broken in" version of the Celestions. I'm pretty much an at-home player so the pre-broken-in feature looks attractive since I don't like a real harsh sound, so I'm concerned about the break-in time for the Eminence speakers.
Opinions? Thanks.

Hey Matt,
I don't know much about Avatars. Splawn cabinets are handmade in the USA. The cab shop is a door over from Scott's Shop. I would go for the Eminence speakers. They are made in the USA. I don't know if you ordered a custom color but the Splawn cab would match perfectly. I don't think you would have any problems with the sound or quality of the Splawn cab.

Well I gotta say I had a Splawn 2-12 and it was awesome. The only reason I got rid of it was cause someone else wanted one really bad and didn't want to wait for a new one, and I had 5 cabs,, I used it at a couple smaller clubs and it sounded fantastic. I was never one to buy into the whole speaker breaking in thing,, I always thought that was an excuse for why Celestions sounded so brittle outta the box,, personally the Eminence to my ears sound great from day one.

on a side note, I grew up just minutes from the Eminence speaker company in KY. I didn't know they were there until a couple of months ago. It blows me away that such a great product is coming out of a hellhole like Eminence, KY. I honestly didn't think they had running water over there

Interesting, I had no idea there was a city called Eminence! For some reason I thought they were built in the midwest somwhere,, I guess some would consider KY midwest?
I guess its how I was raised too, I come from blue-collar lower-middle class upbringing.. Grandfather was a steel-worker in Cleveland and my Dad worked at Ford Motor in Northfield, OH for 30 years,,, buying American in my family is not an option its a requirement,, LMAO.. I tend to go out of my way even if it means spending a few extra bucks to keep most of my belongings Made In USA.

it's not like Eminence speaker co is near a big town and they located outside town to keep costs down. it's a good distance from any "major" city. I told my mom about them being there and she couldn't believe it. I'd be surprised if there was more than one place to buy gas in that town. Check out city hall (scroll down) www.eminencekentucky.com/mainstreet.htm What a hoot!

personally the Eminence to my ears sound great from day one. Thanks Craig, so I'm hearing that the Eminence speakers are fairly warm right out of the box vs the Celestions which some feel to be a tad shrill. If you were to go that route, would you use a Governor/Manowar combo for 80s Metal? Thanks

Hey Matt, Did you decide on a cabinet? How is the comp order going? D I did finally pull the trigger and ordered a Competition, about two weeks ago or so. Still deciding on a cab. I'm looking around for a used 4x12, and I'm looking at a new 2x12 either Splawn or Avatar. I've got some feelers out for the 4x12 since there doesn't seem to be anything in my area available, so I'm giving that some time first.
