Hey guys, I posted this at HCAF but would love to have feeback from you guys as well. I'm pretty much just starting to learn how to record. I am pretty much clueless when it comes to this stuff. Here is my first attempt with a really short sample of a piece I'm messing around with: www.soundclick.com/windsenpanESP Horizon NT-II --> Splawn QR (50 watt setting, 2nd gear, OD2) --> Splawn 212 w/ Eminence Gov/MOW --> sm57 --> M-audio firewire solo --> laptop. Any feedback about recording quality would be greatly appreciated. Is it me or did it come out really bassy? Please excuse my sub-par playing =p Thanks! -Windsen ***UPDATE: click on music and on the first track for the latest version!***

here's a shot of the mic placement. i think it's near the center of the cone on the right speaker. any suggestions on what to do/not to do? and if it helps, here are the settings i used: Presence - 11:30 Bass - 2:30 Mids - 1:00 Treble - 12:30 Gain - 12:00ish Master Volume - 7:30 (it's barely on but still loud!) 2nd Gear OD2 50 watt setting

I gotta say, the more that I play this amp the better it gets. Once I swap out the speakers with some Scumback H75s I will be good to go!

Yea, Derek at rocksolidamps suggested those way back when I was getting my Splawn cab from him. I ended up just going they standard Gov/MOW combo.
Have you played Scumbacks before? How do they sound compared to other speakers? Thanks!

very heavy sounding..the recording sounded a little boomy on the low end, but that's the mic placement I bet

Any feedback about recording quality would be greatly appreciated. Is it me or did it come out really bassy? Please excuse my sub-par playing =p Thanks! -Windsen edit: i just realized I had posted the incorrect version of it. just a minor panning mistake. the correct one has been uploaded. I think it sounds great Windsen! I'm not really hearing the Bassy/Boomy thing. I think it sounds heavy, but not TOO heavy. I'll listen again tomorrow with the volume cranked and see if that changes what I'm hearing. BTW, your playing is SOLID. Nothing sub-par there.

guitargoyle, thanks a bunch for the kinds words. It sounds particularly boomy when I listen through my good speakers, but not so much is just listening through my laptop speakers.
I really appreciate the comment about my playing. Most people here post clips where they absolutely tear it up and sound amazing. Anyways thanks again!

Hey windsen, that sounds really nice, thick and meaty. As for mic placement people have different ideas about where you should/shouldnt place the mic so i just put it where it sounds best to me,i record sometimes with 2 different mics ( Audio Technica ATM41a.-Shure SM57) 1 for each track and the Audio Technica works best where you have yours and the SM57 works best nearer the edge and angled in slightly,i have no idea if this is "correct" mic placement but it works for me,anyway once again nice clip.

Well, I listened again today, at a MUCH louder volume and that did tend to make it a little more boomy I guess. But, honestly, if you and shred hadn't mentioned it, I don't know that I would have keyed in on it. I still think it sounds great.
BTW, just out of curiosity, do you know which speaker you were miced up on. I think it's been posted here somewhere, but I don't remember which is where.

Hey guys, So I re-recorded those couple of riffs, but this time in 3rd gear, OD1, slightly higher bass, gain and volume. I also changed the mix position slightly. I dig this one A LOT! I think I'm much more a fan of the OD1 than OD2. Let me know what you guys think. www.soundclick.com/windsenpanclick on music, first track is the latest. Thanks for listening! -Windsen

It's all good. (thanks to Scott Splawn)

I went ahead and re-recorded the In Flames one and did one with a backing track. Enjoy!
guitargoyle, I'm not sure which speaker is miced. All I know is that it's the right speaker as shown in the pic.
