Brent, he said he's really only a bedroom player so I don't know if he's neccessarily giving in to any "latest trends" if he won't even be gigging with it. He may jsut be after a certain tone.
On the otherhand I think you bring up a good point of which is the better investment. The Cobra will do the metal thing well but that's about it. When you get older and mellower (yes it will happen to you too) and want to play other styles you will be stuck with a metalhead amp that will not sound good for other styles. The Pro Mod can do blues, rock, hard rock, heavy, sh*t....even country (listen to TJ's clips!) and willl do them extremely well. It just seems like a better investment.

Hi tibrent, I don't think I have stated I wanted to copy In Flames tone ever in this thread lol. Heck I won't even be playing much of it until I get another guitar set up for C standard tuning... which will be a while away. I don't want CoB's tone, I just used those of the example of tone I'm after. There's a big difference between wanting to copy a tone and using qualities of their tone for examples and even if I did want a Lee Jackson preamp (which I don't) I don't have a clue on the components for getting a decent rack going so I wouldn't even be bothered about it. I admit In Flames are no Metallica or Van Halen, but there regarded as some of the pioneers of the Melodic Death Metal scene in gothenburg.... It's funny how they've probably been doing their thing for around 10years and some people think the've only jsut come out...If you don't like them no problem with me, I'm not exactly into 70's 80's sh!t becauseI didn't grow up with it, I don't mind abit of it though... Also on the mistakes bit, I think any botique amp your gonna buy that has a nice clear distortion, is gonna show your mistakes. Heck you can make a mistake without even having your guitar plugged into a amp and people can still tell...I think if your a sloppy player in general any amp you use is gonna show your mistakes somehow...I admit I do make mistakes a bit when I play. But part of the reason why this is because I don't practise everyday, mainly because my current set up of guitar/amp gives me a big headache and it doesn't inspire me to play. Maybe owning a Splawn will blow my mind everytime I plug in and I'll be inspired to play everyday without turning off my amp in disgust. I play a Marshall MG and bottom of the rangish Ibanez and trust me their's nothing worse then a Marshall MG30 especially once your ear started opening up for tone. (I've been playing nearly 2 years and last couple of months I've realised how sh!tty the MG is) Anywas I got my interest in Splawn because based on everyones reviews etc their better than any Marshall out today, and the Splawns are probably cheaper than a bunch of High Gain heads i'm looking at right now.

Okay cool. Sorry I mistook the CoB & In Flames references there. Personally, I love the "old" in flames stuff from way way back! Newer stuff, doesn't do anything at all for me. That aside, I get what you are getting at. My whole point is that you shouldn't pin yourself to the current trend of high gain amps, gate pedals & no effects (as most of these current metal bands are). I think an amp like the pro mod will let you do so much more & I think it will let you do what you want better than any of the other amps you mentioned. For instance, the cobra...the amp has no gain reduction. So...no matter where the gain is at, it will always be harsh & brittle & bitting. Just like the crate blue voodoo. Anyhow, no disrespect at all meant. More wanted to be the now "older" & "wiser" metal head. I've been playing metal for my entire life. I just want you to get the most for your potential investment. Best of luck with all. -Brent

Hey mate, yep +1 on old In Flames stuff I love it, I like playing stuff pre Reroute you know, not really that fond of their new stuff either cept for a handful of songs. Ahh I didn't know Cobra's were regarded as trend amps. Always thought of Peavey 5150's and Mesa Duelies as trend amps! I don't play much blues and all that stuff, just metal mainly. But heck things can change in the future and if a amp can do all sorts I think that's a bonus! Oh yeah dude even though no effects and stuff might be a trend but I love the beauty of just plugging and playing you know, Plus I hate effects, only one's I'd invest in is maybe a delay&chorus pedal or something and that's it, possibly a wah as well. But I think your right,by the looks of it the Pro Mod seem's like a really good investment for me. Only other one's that I'm looking at in the price range is the Cobra and Peavey 6505 (I kinda want a decent clean though ).I think I've settled on the Pro Mod only thing I'm sketching about is I'm in Australia, I'd hate it send it back and fourth between country's if I have ever have a problem with it you know, that's something I gotta consider... Anyways cheers for the advice

Naw, I think the 5150 has pushed past the trend stage. The 5150 has got some great recorded tones out of it too. Soilwork's ; natural born chaos, Strapping Young Lad ; everything up to Alien, Devin Townsend ; everything up to Synchestra , In Flames ; quite a few recordings etc...Great metal amp. The Dual Rectumfryer I think actually has longevity to it though it does cement itself in which any trend that has a decent amount of gain to it haha. Framus got big right around the time that guys like lamb of god & what have you started playing um. Even though I don't believe they play them anymore, that is what they are known for, at least the cobra. Delay & chorus pedals are the only worth while units anyhow -Brent

Instead of creating a new thread, I thought I'd just pile on here. I am going to get a Splawn Pro Mod. There, I've said it! I want an amp that's going to be an investment. I do play lots of metal (mostly So Far So Good/Rust In Peace era Megadeth, Forbidden, Corrosion Of Conformity, et al.), but I also LOVE playing blues and clean stuff. I'm also really into getting the tone of EVH and Vito Bratta of White Lion. Basically, nothing I've heard live or soundclipped has come close to what I've heard of Splawns while lurking on this site for the last three or four months.
My question isn't so much as "can my Pro Mod do metal?" but if I should order a Splawn head ASAP. I guess this should really be directed toward a Splawn employee or Scott himself, but I might as well ask you guys first, since some or most of you seem to be in close contact with Splawn and have lots of buyer experience with them. In all honesty, I don't have the money right now. I've heard about the wait times for Splawn heads (which are understandable), but I would like to get one ASAP. There's no question I'll be able to afford it over time, as my income situation is very stable and healthy. I just have a variety of things to pay for and only so much I can put aside every month for the head.
Bottom line, I just don't want the situation to become "save, save, save, save, finally get enough" then deal with yet another 8 week delay on top of that. I'm really excited about getting to take some time off this summer from school and work to gig and jam with friends and I really want to do it with a Splawn.

If you know that is what you want then I would say order it right away. I think that you pay half of it up front then half when it ships later so that would give you time to save the rest. I got mine used so I might be wrong. I say go for it man. The Pro Mod is most definitely a great investment and you will be amazed at the tone!
