Hey guys. I was looking into getting a quick rod as I've heard good things but I was wondering if it's possible to get Mastodon type tones from it? I know they were using JCM 800's. I currently have a peavey 6505+ and I was looking for something a bit more flexible. When I asked on another board several users recommended getting a Splawn over my other wish list amp.

Can you post a clip of just what tone from Mastsdon you want to get? I don’t really listen to them so...

I just listened to a few minutes of Steambringer by Mastodon:
You could get that tone with zero effort from a Quickrod! It almost sounds like he's playing a Quickrod actually...

Hey there and welcome to the Splawn forum. Hopefully we will see more of you around I would agree with these guys that you can get a Mastodon tone with a Splawn but it will also depend on your guitar/pups/speakers/cab/pedals etc. To get their overthetop distorted sound you will may need a fuzz pedal. I did a clip once trying to emulate that tone but had Big Muff Pi in the mix. Unfortunately it was on photobucket. What are the other amps on your dream list? A lot of the Friedman amps will cop that tone probably perfectly - and Bill has a signature Butterslax amp with Friedman. I personally wouldn't buy a Butterslax (or any Friedman amp) but just sayin'.

Why wouldn't you buy a Friedman? Is it just the exorbitant price?! I've seen comparisons of the BE to the QR and the QR sounds almost as good for a lot less $.

Didn't hear about that but just saw some old posts on Rig-Talk about some big brouhaha with King and Cameron... wow.
Yeah, nobody needs more drama in their lives...
Meanwhile Scott just keeps on quietly making kickass amps in his workshop and sells them at a reasonable price!

Brad King had a guitar/amp store in my state before all that crap went down with him a few years ago. I’ve been there several times. He let my plug into a ‘68 Plexi and play LOUD. It was glorious. Lol

Cannot say enough good things about Splawn. The current run of ‘Fully loaded’ QRs and Nitros have all the characteristic open, uncompressed Splawn tone, but between the mid cut, old/new and drop B+ options, you can really ‘soften’ the tone and tailor it to the speaker cab and the room. Super versatile amps!

I have a B+ Splawn Pro Stock (2015) AND the ButterSlax. Love both amps. Slax much more expensive. It's a MONSTER. They are different. If you want Mastadon today, get the Butterslax. ...The Splawns are amazing amps at half the price. It just depends on what you like and what works for your setup and budget.
I love both amps. ...I actually have to sell one of them. The Splawn is tighter and more compressed in higher gain. The Slax is less compressed, rounder in the overall tone, so it's thicker, but not quite as tight or compressed as my Pro Stock B+.

Sorry for the late replies. As far as Friedman's go I think they sound great but I'm not going to drop 3500-3800 on an amp or at least do it and stay married. I ended up grabbing a Kemper and am running it through a tube power amp which has been pretty great but I still think I'm going to sell it and grab a Quick Rod or maybe a Mesa Mark IV. One thing about the Kemper it got me to quit thinking I need a million different amps/effects and tones.
