Anyone ever compare the Quick Rod to a Marshall JCM 2000 DSL100? I know that the QR is waaaay better quality as far as construction but I actually like the sound of the DSL100 that I tried out at the store a while back. Of course I wasn't able to crank it up in the store so that was a very low volumes. I know that the DSL100 only has three filter caps instead of six like the QR (and the old Marshall's) so when you crank it, it's not going to sound better as it gets louder like an old Marshall or the Spalwn should. I already ordered a QR but I was just curious about the overall opinions of the DSL100.

I had mine gone over , and they did somethings to it. installed new SED winged-c tubes and rebiased it . They called this service hotrodding it. MADSCIENCEWORKS, is the name of the place that did mine. I reallt like it for what it is. But the Splawn is an entirely different animal. :)Mine is the DSL-100. they seem to have alot better tone wound up. I guess it's the headroom that it has that makes the difference when it comes to the tone at higher volumes.Of course the mods did make the difference.

The other guitarist in my band uses that very amplifier, so if you want a head-to-head comparison, you can go to our myspace page www.myspace.com/twilightodyssey and listen to the song SQUADRON. Sorry, it's only an mp3. Left side = Marshall JCM2000. Right side = Quick Rod. Same bridge pickup in both guitars (Bare Knuckle Cold Sweat) and same mic scheme. All leads are the Quick Rod, though.

I had a Marshall TSL 100 watt half-stack. My Quickrod is way more toneful, organic, articulate, and menacing. I am serious. If you want the "Marshall" tones from your favorite 80's rock gods, the Splawn is the amplifier that gives you those tones right out of the box.

first of all.. those amps only sound decent to me at high volumes... at low volumes the gain channels suck !! very very grainy... the classic green vintage gain channel is the best on this amo imo

Have you guys checked this out yet.. WOW.. you can really hear the difference between the two amps. Especially at one break toward the end when the Marshall guy is playing a riff by himself.. Ben you got a killer tone on this but seriously if I were you I would have politely told your other guitar player to use your amp in the studio,, the whole song sounds great but when that riff comes in it sounds like a fcking crate G-10.. horrible tone. It pulls the whole recording down IMO.

Unfortunately, all the rhythm tracks were performed live, so that wasn't an option. But that's the first step in getting a Splawn into Jimmy's hands.

You'd have to be deaf as a post not to notice it, especially the Priest style break! Thin, buzzsaw guitar on the left and then crushing wall of tone on the right comes in.
I would like to get a Competition in the exact opposite colour scheme as the QR - white tolex, black plexi, white knobs, etc. It'll look sick!!

My opinion-
DSL/TSL meh
I love Marshall(the older ones anyways) but most folks are pissing up a rope if you think these are gonna sound anything like the good older ones.yeah they have more gain but is it usable, musical type gain with harmonic overtones?no sir, not in any that I have played.
I think reliability issues have been a problem with these amps also. I've seen a bunch in for repair.
What the Splawn has is all the older Marshall goodness and the hotrodded goodies rolled into one amp. And did I mention it has what is missing in so many of todays amps- BALLS ;D
FWIW- I think the DSL 100 sounds the best out of that series(DSL/TSL) when cranked
