I got the standard ones... ECC83s, not the 803s. I didn't get the high gain option... I've only got the gain on my amp at about 1:00 and we're really not a "high gain" band so I thought I'd get the basic ones. They were on sale for $9.95 each though!

So I put in the JJ's tonight in V2 and V3... interesting...
With the bridge pickup of my PRS on gear one OD2 they sound STELLAR! I mean really really good. But, on the middle (both pickups) and neck position it did get muddy. Also on gear 2 and 3 they sounded more muddy even on the bridge pickup.
I may do the gtrjunior suggestion of putting in an EHX in V2 or V3 and keep a JJ in there for the best of both worlds.
Ugh, great tone, the everlasting journey!
For now, and thru band practice on Wednesday I'm going to keep the JJ's in there.

I sometimes find that when I’m at home I’m constantly trying to tweak something but in a band mix the amp sounds different (better).

Yeah it was a pseudo band situation... jamming at full volume with the other guitarist, but you're right, put bass and drums in the mix and things change. Also, I was only using the Street Rod combo, not using my extension cab that has a greenback (brighter speaker) in it. SR combo has a creamback, little bit darker.

I even find that in a band situation an amp can even “feel” different.

OK... I don't know what happened but the JJ's sounded great from the get-go tonight in my Street Rod. Not muddy, more of a rich sound than muddy. Played them the whole practice and was very pleased. Used all 3 pickups and gears 1 and 2 (OD2 on both, adds a bit of edge and gain). So, a few theories: 1. Last time it was just me and the other guitar player and his tone can be shrill, maybe in my head I was thinking I sounded muddy in comparison... 2. Last time the amp made a weird staticky "rushing" sound for a few seconds when I turned it on after I put the new tubes in and even when I put the old ones back. Not sure why... but it didn't do that tonight, the JJ's were dead quiet, very nice. 3. I used my extension cabinet which has a greenback in it so I didn't just have the creamback from the combo. Probably a combination of all of the above but the bottom line is I really liked the JJ tone! Edit: They are a very "musical" tube if that makes any sense...

I think that staticky sound is just dirt or debris. I like to spray contact cleaner when I swap tubes. I don’t always do it 100% of the time but I try to do it regularly.

Yeah the socket may have been wet with contact cleaner when I fired it up... Anyway, different topic... Hey gtrjunior, I saw in one of your signatures that you had a cab with Weber beam blockers in it. How did that sound with the QR? Just wondering... I might get one for my SR, had good luck with them with my Blackstar HT-40 and cabs I used with a Peavey Ultra 120+.

This is the cab with the beam blockers. It doesn’t really affect the tone per se, but for a gigging player like yourself they are great because they prevent he cab from ripping someone’s head off that may be unfortunate enough to have to stand in front of it. Basically it disperses the high end more efficiently than the speaker itself does. I also have a plexiglass shield that I use in front of my cab live....soundmen love me. Lol You can turn up a bit without washing out the FOH. I just run a bit of guitar through my monitor.

Cool! I've got one in my Blackstar extension cab that I use... I may order one for the Street Rod itself... If I don't like it I can take it out!

Put the beam blocker in the SR last night, helped a lot! Be aware that the screws holding in the speaker are allen screws, not philips! Fortunately the drummer had a set of allen wrenches.
I could hear myself better since usually with my right the sound is going into my knees and my lower back! Got some recordings and the tone was blended better too.

Still digging the JJ's! The EHX sounded raspy (like in my Blackstar) and the stock Chinese ones were indeed a bit mushy. After digging around I found that I had quite a few 12AX7s hanging around, GT, Mesa, Marshall etc... For now the JJ's are doing just fine.
