So I got some birthday money from the in-laws and don't really need any new effects but always wondered if a compressor might help out my rig. Ordered the inexpensive but well reviewed Mooer Yellow Comp.
Tried it at home through my Boss headphone amp and my little Laney practice amp, sounded really good, more sustain, more oomph, just overall goodness.
Tried it last night at practice with my Street Rod (very early in the chain, guitar->Banshee->tuner->wah->Yellow Comp)
Had to do tweaking and finally found something "good". Had it on for most of the band practice... something wasn't feeling right to me though.
Near end of practice, turned it off and my rig sounded a "lot" better! The mojo that it added to cheaper amps just wasn't there, in fact the coloration detracted from the tone of the SR quite a bit.
Might use it for some special purpose things (can get controlled feedback very easily with it) but definitely not a "leave it on all the time" thing.
Anybody use a compressor with their Splawn? For what situations? How's it affect the tone?
Thanks for any insight!

I have no experience with the Mooer but I have a Rothwell Love Squeeze that I have as an always on Compressor. It’s as transparent as it gets and is a simple 2 knob unit. Level and compression...,easy peasy. I love it. I originally bought it for my clean channel but one day I switched to the OD side and forgot to turn it off. For a few minutes I couldn’t figure out why the Splawn felt to good! I think the secret to compression is to use only what you need. Too much is no good. I set the amp on clean and only add enough compression to keep everything “even”. Then I just leave it on! I find the compression on the OD side makes the sustain, the feel and the ease of playing awesome.

I haven't ever used a compression pedal but i did use a fulltone fulldrive 2 for a clean boost for a few months and discovered that it tightened the bottom end but took the warm splawn tone out so i got rid of it and now use no boosts.

Yeah... we're always looking to "improve" our tone, sometimes gotta take a step back and realize what we have is already great. Until the next GAS attack hits!
