for sick and demented reasons (ie trunk space and lugging)I wish to run 2x12s with my QR, 1 2x12 @ 50w and a pair of them @ 100w. It appears I can run 8 ohm speakers in series at 8 ohms on the amp, or 16 ohm speakers in parallel at 4 ohms on the amp. Any reason I haven't thought of to choose one or the other?
Caveats;
1) I have 16 ohm speakers (Celestions) I could use, requiring the purchase of only two speakers for my combination.
2) using 8 ohm speakers would mean purchasing four speakers, likely a pair of Scumbacks and Splawn SB or BBs.
The considerable expertise of this distinguished board is greatly appreciated! ;D

I'm not sure if you found your answer but here were my thoughts.
2 - 8 ohm speakers wired in series = 16 ohm load 2 - 8 ohm speakers wired in parallel = 4 ohm load
2 - 16 ohm speakers wired in series = 32 ohm load (unconventional) 2 - 16 ohm speakers wired in parallel = 8 ohm load (not 4)
Both cabs NEED to be the same load in order to run them together (safely)
Running 2 cabs together you add them up in parallel (even if they are daisy chained).
If you have 16 ohm speakers now - then I would wire those in parallel for a 8 ohm cab.
Then for second cab, make sure it is 8 ohm too. Connecting both cabs together would then give you a total ohm load of 4.
I believe that is correct, but if anyone would like to check my math please do.

Thanks for the breakdown.
I guess I was asking if there was any perceived advantage of running the QR at 4 or 8 ohms, of if anyone had experience comparing parallel and series wired speakers?

Ahh,
ok, saw all this, and this lead me to ask about the amp ohms! Nice article Ayton! I have decided to avoid the whole 4ohm speaker mess, and get the Scumbacks and Splawn speakers (16 ohm), as great speakers will mean more to me than some kind of subtle perception from speaker wiring and amp impedance. I knew you would make me see the light!
Later!

Jim recommended M75 100w, with the large dust cap. I had H75s before, loved them, not enough power for the QR. Given that my heavy metal band is the volume Indy 500, I am considering the XH75 speaker. So, in short, don't know yet! (well, one or the other anyway!) I will post when I pull the trigger and get them installed.
